Kickstart Start

Social media has rapidly changed the way we communicate through technology. Being a part of Generation Z has exposed a majority of my adolescence to social media. Staring in 5th grade I remember Instagram becoming a platform widely used. Facebook was already considered for "old people" and everyone my age was on Instagram. It is mind-blowing to think of how just in ten years the way we use and view Instagram has changed. Being a ten-year-old with Instagram was all about casual posting and sharing moments from my daily life. As I reflect on others and my usage of social media now, it is for sharing idealistic versions of ourselves in photo-shopped selfies or extravagant vacation videos. Social media platforms and the consumers who use them are ever-changing which makes them so interesting.

I would find it insightful to learn about how social media trends start and what prompts them to take off. Everything appears viral nowadays, and it brings into question what social media content sticks and what sinks. A communication platform that was huge when I was in junior high school was Kik. It was comparable to WhatsApp or Messenger. Almost 80% of my text conversations were on the app, but in around three years, no one used it anymore. What are the driving factors that lead users to abandon an app? With so much information circulating at once, I would like to know how social media platforms make their mark on society. Another area surrounding social media that intrigues me is why people choose to communicate through these platforms. I think users find comfort in the feeling of "not being alone" as stated in the Ted Talk in week 1. These social media platforms are also involved in different aspects of our privacy and I would like to learn about more ways users' privacy can be at stake and how the companies prevent data and privacy hacking. There appears to be a vast amount of things that go on behind the scenes that I would enjoy finding out.
